Welcome back to another edition of Next-Level Skills. Each edition, we explore the human and leadership capabilities that help us navigate work and life more effectively. Skills that move beyond theory and into practical application.

A warm welcome to everyone who has joined our community since the last edition. Whether you've been with us since the beginning or have recently discovered the newsletter or the book, thank you for being part of this journey.

This edition, we explore Critical Thinking - the art of making informed decisions and solving problems with clarity and logic.

The Meeting That Changed My Perspective

Years ago, during a tense project review meeting, we faced an alarming issue - a critical deliverable was weeks behind schedule, and the team was divided over the next steps. Some wanted to rush through with shortcuts, while others suggested starting over entirely. The room buzzed with frustration and conflicting opinions.

Instead of jumping to conclusions, I took a step back and asked the team: “What’s the root cause here?”. After systematically analysing the timeline, resource allocation, and task dependencies, it became clear that a single oversight in resource scheduling had caused the delay. Addressing it directly saved us time, avoided unnecessary rework, and brought the team back on track. That's the transformative power of this skill.

That day, I learned that critical thinking isn’t just about solving problems — it’s about asking the right questions.

What is Critical Thinking?

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly, rationally, and independently. It involves questioning assumptions, analysing information, and evaluating outcomes to arrive at the best possible decision.

Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.

Edward de Bono

Critical thinking complements creativity, empowering you to explore possibilities while staying grounded in reality.

Why Does Critical Thinking Matter?

  1. 1
    Enhances Decision-Making
In fast-paced environments, snap decisions can lead to mistakes. Critical thinking equips you with the tools to weigh options carefully and choose wisely.
  2. 2
    Boosts Problem-Solving
By breaking down complex challenges into manageable parts, critical thinking helps you find effective solutions.
  3. 3
    Encourages Innovation
It allows you to question norms and explore new ideas without being confined by existing frameworks.

How to Sharpen Your Critical Thinking Skills

  1. 1
    Question Assumptions
Don’t take things at face value. Always ask, “Why is this true?” or “What evidence supports this?”
  2. 2
    Seek Diverse Perspectives
Engage with people who challenge your thinking or have different experiences.
  3. 3
    Analyse Before You Act
Take the time to evaluate information, identify patterns, and consider consequences before making decisions.
  4. 4
    Practice Reflection
After any decision, reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and what you could do differently next time.

The Four Stages of Critical Thinking

  1. 1
    Observation
    Gather accurate, unbiased information.
  2. 2
    Analysis
Break the information into smaller components to understand relationships and implications.
  3. 3
    Evaluation
Assess the evidence and alternatives objectively.
  4. 4
    Action
Make informed decisions and communicate them effectively.

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.

Benjamin Franklin

Critical thinking is that investment — it sharpens your mind, boosts your confidence, and prepares you for any challenge.
